Semantle — Guess the Secret Word Using Semantic Similarity
Welcome to the ultimate semantic word-guessing game! Semantle is a unique puzzle where you guess a hidden word not by its spelling, but by its meaning. Each guess you submit receives a numerical similarity score indicating how semantically close your word is to the secret target. Powered by advanced word embedding algorithms, Semantle tests your vocabulary, associations, and lateral thinking like no other word game.
How to Play Semantle
The goal is to find the secret word by submitting guesses and analyzing their semantic proximity:
- Type any valid English word and press Enter.
- You will see a Similarity Score (from -100 to 100). Higher scores mean closer meanings.
- If your word is within the top 1,000 closest words, you will see a Temperature/Rank out of 1,000.
- A rank of
1000/1000is the secret target word! - Use the score and ranking feedback to pivot your guesses toward the correct semantic theme.
Semantle Rules Explained
Semantic Similarity vs. Spelling
In Semantle, spelling is completely irrelevant. For example, if the secret word is "CAT," the word "COT" (one letter difference) will have a very low score, while the word "KITTEN" or "FELINE" (spelled differently but close in meaning) will score very high. The game uses a Word2Vec database to measure semantic proximity in high-dimensional vector space.
The Rank and Temperature System
When your guess is among the top 1,000 closest words to the secret word, you enter the "hot zone." The game displays its rank (e.g., 950/1000) and represents closeness as temperature (Cold, Warm, Hot). Any guess outside the top 1,000 is simply marked as "Cold," indicating you are still far from the general topic.
Parts of Speech
The target word can be any common part of speech: noun, verb, adjective, or adverb. Your guesses can be any part of speech as well, and the algorithm compares their usage context across millions of texts.
Best Semantle Strategy Tips
Start With Broad Semantic Anchors
Begin with a list of diverse words that cover different aspects of human experience, such as "nature," "technology," "emotion," "movement," "people," or "object." This helps you locate the general conceptual neighborhood of the secret word.
Follow the Heat Gradient
Once you find a word with a positive similarity score or a rank (e.g., Warm or Hot), stop guessing random terms. Brainstorm synonyms, associated concepts, or antonyms related to that word. If the score goes up, keep moving in that direction. If it drops, try a different aspect of that theme.
Check Synonyms and Related Words
If you get stuck around rank 900, try related words of different parts of speech. For instance, if "run" is hot, try nouns like "race" or "marathon," adjectives like "fast," or verbs like "sprint" or "jog."

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Semantle?
Semantle is a word-guessing game where you find a hidden word based on semantic similarity. The game gives you a numerical score showing how close your guess is to the meaning of the target word.
How is the similarity score calculated?
Semantle uses word embeddings (such as Word2Vec) which analyze the contexts in which words appear in large datasets. It calculates the cosine similarity between the vector representations of your guess and the secret word.
What is a good ranking in Semantle?
If your guess is in the top 1,000 closest words, it will display a rank from 1 to 1,000. A rank of 1,000/1,000 means you have successfully guessed the secret word.
